Who is Manpower?

Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Manpower is a global employment agency, that matches thousands of companies with tens of thousands of temporary, temp-to-hire, or permanent employees. It is part of Manpower Group, which puts over 600,000 job seekers to work each day at the offices of over 400,000 clients in various parts of the world. Manpower Group has 3,000 locations in 80 countries. In addition to its Manpower agency brand, Manpower Group also includes ManpowerGroup Solutions to help companies source, select and onboard clients; Experis to help determine and seek out the right candidates; and Right Management, which focuses on workforce engagement and worker retention and leadership coaching.

In addition to finding and delivering the right candidates for its employer clients, Manpower trains workers on its clients' common program processes.

Manpower Group is listed among Forbes Global 2000 ranking of the largest public companies in the world.

Manpower Job Opportunities

Manpower offers corporate opportunities of its own, as well as contingent (short term, temporary) work at the offices of its employer clients, contract-to-permanent (commonly referred to as temp-to-hire) work for Manpower clients, and permanent employment for the companies hired by Manpower to fill theirvacancies. In the most common job situation, temp-to-hire workers, employees of Manpower, perform job duties for a Manpower client for a pre-determined number of days (commonly 90 days.) During this time both the employer and employee get to try each other out. At the end of this trial period, the employer client might invite the worker to become a permanent employee.

Manpower helps job seekers find employment in dozens of industries such as oil and gas, telecommunications, advertising and public relations, real estate, financial services, media, sales, banking, medical, IT, and construction. Manpower Group corporate positions are available all over the globe, including job titles such as recruiter, branch manager, business development manager in engineering, client account director, and manager of HR technology and analytics.

Employee reviews offer a glimpse into Manpower corporate wages:

  • Staffing specialists at U.S. branch locations average $36,380 each year, with the highest paid making $48,000
  • Administrative assistants earn, on average, $14.01 per hour, while contract AA's average $18.12
  • Data entry clerks make an average of $12.01 per hour
  • Branch managers earn between $51,000 and $125,000 each year
  • Production workers are paid, on average, $11.16 per hour
  • Sales executives average just under $74,000, with salaries capping out at $103,000

Reviews say that the interview process is fairly easy, beginning often with a phone interview, and then followed by a face-to-face interview and skills assessments. While 44 percent of Manpower hires apply online, just as many (14 percent) are solicited by a Manpower recruiter as simply walk in the Manpower branch to apply. Sixty-one percent of applicants rate the application experience a positive one. More than one worker notes the time from application to hire as only two days.

Is Manpower a Good Place to Work?

Since going to work for Manpower, except for its corporate staff, can ultimately mean going to work for another employer, the answer to this has many variations. Glassdoor reviews of health insurance and other benefits are mostly negative, earning the employer a low 2.7 benefit rating. Health insurance is described as prohibitively costly.

Its overall Glassdoor rating is 3.3, with 60 percent saying they would recommend Manpower jobs to their friends. Workers give kudos to Manpower for its choice of short or long term assignments, its friendly staff and its quick assignments. The complaints are primarily about a poor benefit package and lack of job advancement. A common complaint, which seems unreasonable, is that there is no guarantee of permanent placement. The latter is, after all, its business model and made clear up front to candidates.

Among its honors, Manpower earned first place in Fortune Magazine's 2014 list of the World's Most Admired Companies.
