Who is Kroger?

Kroger is the largest grocery chain in the United States, with 3,600 stores in 30 states, operating under various banners such as Fry's, Harris Teeter, Pay Less and Ralph's. While the bulk of our staff and our revenue are with our grocers, some of these such as Smith's and our 1999 acquisition Fred Meyer, also sell general merchandise and jewelry. Chicago-area Mariano's even has a a wood-fired pizza oven, and sit-down sushi bar.

Our versatility expands even further, having evolved through smart acquisitions, to include, for example, Quik Stop, Kwik Shop, The Little Clinic for neighborhood medical care, Vitacost for vitamins and other healthy products, and the marketing and analytics services of 84.51, Our Kroger Personal Finance offers credit, prepaid debit, gift, and reloadable debit cards; pet insurance for dogs and cats; ID theft and fraud protection, and credit monitoring services. Additionally, we take pride in our support of breast cancer awareness and research, military and their families, the Feeding America program, and another 145,000 community organizations and schools.

Applying to Kroger

While the interview process varies by brand and location, with some positions and brands initiating phone interviews prior to an invitation to meet in person, hiring is generally initiated online, with a typical two-week timeframe from application to hire. The web-based Kroger Talent Community enables a search of jobs in every brand and locations. Beyond that, however, the Community invites those who aren't yet ready to apply, or whom there isn't an immediate perfect job fit, to create their profile, with as many resumes as they choose, cover letters and other important documentation such as licenses and other credentials. All are private until the candidate chooses otherwise.

Is Kroger a Good Employer?

While a 3.6 employee rating on Indeed and 3.1 on Glassdoor isn't stellar, the bulk of complaints seem to dwell on wage. According to Glassdoor, the average cashier hourly wage is $8.38, full time pharmacy techs average $29,000 a year, and store managers start at $37,000 and top out at $101,000.

Kroger benefits may well negate any low-wage issue for many, however. Where Kroger earns the bulk of its praise is in its scheduling flexibility, hiring diversity, and lack of micromanagement. Fun, friendly, fast-paced, and a well-oiled machine were among the employee descriptors on Indeed.com.
